let me tell you about my friend sofia
who spent many years with me as a dog
i could adopt a normal manner of speech for once and
call her "my dog" but i know she was never 'mine'
anyhow, one day i was talking to myself
how come she gets so absurdly excited before
we hit the same street for our daily walk
...same old pavement, same old sky...
then i got an internal e-mail, i'd call it
you know, the kind that lights up in your belly
like a firefly would, and it said,
"because it is never the same"
then i knew why sometimes
she'd look at me with utter pity
or worse, with plain boredom because
i was the blind raining on her parade
although i've always sought out elements of wonder
it's only recently i grew to embrace the activity
my 2010 was mostly spent locally but, thanks to sofia,
i had a very rich year filled with fireflies in my heart
